When it comes to wedding planning, few moments are as iconic—and nerve-wracking—as the first dance. But guess what? Practicing doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right attitude (and maybe the right playlist), you can turn rehearsals into a fun, bonding experience with your partner that becomes a core memory even before the big day.
As a seasoned wedding photographer, I’ve captured countless first dances, from classic sways to fully choreographed show-stoppers. And while style matters, the most beautiful dances are the ones where the couple is fully present, relaxed, and enjoying themselves.
Here’s a tip: don’t overthink it. Choose a song that reflects your relationship, not necessarily the most popular one. “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne, for example, is upbeat, soulful, and heartfelt without being overplayed. It sets the tone for a fun, lighthearted moment without turning it into a performance.
When practicing, make it fun! Pour a glass of wine, clear the living room, and dance like no one's watching (except maybe your dog). Remember, this isn’t Dancing with the Stars—your wedding isn’t a competition. Keep it simple, keep it you.
One important note: avoid blending the first dance with special dances like the father-daughter or mother-son moments. Each dance deserves its spotlight. Combining them may seem efficient, but it can dilute the emotional impact of each individual connection.
From a wedding photographer's perspective, each dance tells a unique story. Capturing those stories authentically means giving them space to breathe—and that starts with planning them as distinct, intentional moments.
So don’t stress about perfect footwork. Focus on the connection, the music, and the laughter you share during practice. You’ll be amazed how those little moments shine through in your photos—and how your wedding photographer will capture not just a dance, but the start of a new rhythm in your life together.
